Congress Joins Rajya Sabha Battle, Eyes BJD Tie‑Up
Political activity in Odisha has intensified ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. On Friday, Congress MLA Satyajit Gamang collected three sets of nomination forms, signalling the party’s intent to contest.
The move comes a day after the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) secured six sets of forms.
Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhakta Charan Das rushed to Delhi to consult with senior leaders and finalize strategy.
He emphasised that Congress, as a national party, will field candidates and make a serious bid to win. Das also indicated openness to supporting a joint opposition candidate with BJD, noting that together the two parties could secure at least one seat.
Currently, Congress holds 14 MLAs in the 147‑member Assembly, with one additional MLA backed by the CPM, bringing its effective strength to 15.
However, 30 votes are required to secure a Rajya Sabha seat, making alliances crucial. Candidate announcements are expected soon, possibly as early as Saturday, pending approval from the central leadership.
