Congress Announces Ghasiram Majhi as Candidate for Nuapada Bypoll

As preparations heat up for the upcoming Nuapada by-election on November 11, the Congress party is taking the lead in campaign efforts, with party circles abuzz with excitement over the official candidate announcement. In a unanimous recommendation from the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) chief Bhakta Charan Das and the party’s political affairs committee, Ghasiram Majhi, president of the Nuapada District Congress Committee, has been cleared as the party’s nominee.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) put its stamp of approval on Monday, followed by a formal notification issued today by AICC General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal. Majhi’s name was officially declared, sparking jubilation among party workers.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia, which had already stirred political fervour across the state. OPCC chief Das’s early prediction that Ghasiram Majhi would be the frontrunner has proven spot on. Majhi, a seasoned campaigner, has contested the Nuapada assembly seat three times, including in the 2024 general elections, where he ran as an independent after being denied a party ticket. He secured an impressive 50,941 votes, clinching second place. The official Congress candidate at the time, former OPCC president Sarat Pattanayak, garnered over 15,000 votes, leading Das to estimate a combined Congress vote bank exceeding 65,000 in the constituency.

With this strong base, Das is confident of victory this time around. “There’s no hurdle to his win,” Das asserted, emphasising the party’s organisational edge.

Meanwhile, rivals BJD and BJP remain undecided on their candidates, caught in internal deliberations. Nuapada’s assembly segment falls under the Kalahandi Lok Sabha constituency, where Congress holds sway, giving the party a clear propaganda advantage.

Das has been camping in Nuapada since Monday for a four-day stay to bolster grassroots momentum. He highlighted the enthusiasm, noting that thousands of workers turned out for the first day’s rally – a testament to the party’s rising spirits.

As the by-election battle looms, Congress appears poised to capitalise on local sentiments and its vote consolidation strategy.
