Cold Wave Tightens Grip on Odisha; Bhubaneswar Sees Sharp Temperature Drop
Odisha is reeling under an intense cold wave as icy north‑westerly winds sweep across the state, bringing winter‑like conditions much earlier than expected.
Both interior and coastal districts have recorded a sharp decline in temperatures, disrupting daily life and raising concerns for vulnerable groups.
Bhubaneswar Records Steady Decline
For three consecutive days, Bhubaneswar has witnessed a consistent fall in minimum temperatures. On November 16, the capital city recorded 14.8°C at 5:30 AM, down from 16°C just two days earlier. The nearly 1.5°C drop has made mornings noticeably colder for commuters and residents.
Interior & Coastal Districts Hit Hard
Districts such as Koraput, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Khordha, and Jharsuguda reported temperatures 5–7°C below normal. Coastal regions too saw a dip of 3–5°C below seasonal averages, intensifying the chill across Odisha.
Harsh Conditions in Hilly Areas
Ten cities, including Semiliguda, Daringbadi, G. Udayagiri, and Phulbani, reported temperatures below 12°C. Dense fog and biting winds have made early‑morning travel difficult, with residents struggling against poor visibility and freezing air.
IMD Forecast Extends Cold Spell
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its forecast, predicting that the cold wave may last up to a week. Night temperatures are expected to remain low, particularly in northern and interior districts.
Advisory for Residents
Authorities have urged precautions for children, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions. With winter arriving early, Odisha may face worsening conditions in the coming days.
