Cold Wave Grips Odisha: Temperatures Dip Below 10°C in 16 Cities
Odisha is reeling under a severe cold wave, with minimum temperatures plunging below 10°C in at least 16 cities, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The icy spell, expected to persist for the next two days, has left residents across southern, western, and interior districts battling biting winds and dense fog.
The coldest spot in the state was G Udayagiri, which recorded a bone‑chilling 3.1°C. Other regions such as Semiliguda (4.6°C), Phulbani (5.5°C), Daringbadi (6°C), and Koraput (6.5°C) also reported sub‑zero‑like conditions.
Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Nabarangpur, and Bhawanipatna hovered around 8°C, while Angul and Kirei dipped just below 9°C.
Daily life has been disrupted, particularly in Koraput, where farmers and commuters braved freezing fog to reach markets as early as 3 am. Locals described this winter as unusually harsh, with the chill lingering throughout the day.
Despite the cold, tourist activity remains steady in Koraput, with visitors gathering at tea stalls and eateries to stay warm.
The IMD has issued an advisory urging residents to take precautions during early morning and late‑night hours, as the cold wave is likely to continue for the next couple of days.
