Chilika Traditional Boat Race Debuts at Barkul | Odisha Tourism Milestone
Odisha marked a historic milestone in its tourism and cultural promotion efforts with the launch of the first-ever Chilika Traditional Boat Race at Barkul.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the event, describing Chilika Lake as a “unique treasure of natural wealth” and pledging to elevate it as a global tourism magnet.
The Deputy CM highlighted the arrival of migratory birds, the boating experience, and the traditional fishing and rowing techniques of local fishermen as elements that leave visitors spellbound.
She emphasised the government’s commitment to protecting Chilika’s ecology, preserving fishermen’s livelihoods, and encouraging a greater influx of migratory birds to strengthen Odisha’s tourism appeal.
Organised by the Odisha Tourism Department, the competition saw participation from 81 traditional boat teams representing fishermen’s committees from Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam districts.
On the opening day, 45 teams competed in preliminary heats over a 700-metre course, with qualifying teams advancing to the final round.
Extensive safety measures were in place, including fire services, scuba divers, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and police personnel, ensuring the safety of both participants and spectators.
The event not only showcased the skill and heritage of local fishing communities but also underscored Chilika’s rich cultural and ecological significance.
By blending tradition with tourism, Odisha aims to position Chilika as a stronger international destination while contributing to the vision of a developed Odisha and a developed India.
