Chilika Bird Census 2026 Records Over 1.13 Million Birds Across 196 Species

Bhubaneswar: The annual bird census at Chilika Lake has once again highlighted the wetland’s global ecological importance.

Conducted on January 18, 2026, the census recorded 1,132,200 birds across 196 species, marking an increase of nearly 5,000 birds compared to last year.

The exercise was carried out across five ranges—Tangi, Balugaon, Satpada, Nuapada, and Rambha—between 6 AM and 12 noon.

A total of 130 enumerators in 22 teams participated, including retired forest officials, Chilika Development Authority staff, professors and students from OUAT, NGO representatives, tourist guides, police inspectors, and bird experts.

For the first time, drones were deployed alongside binoculars and field guides to ensure accurate counting.

Strict conservation measures were enforced, with tourist boating and fishing temporarily banned in sensitive zones to minimise disturbance.

Experts note that the stable species count and rising bird numbers reflect healthy ecosystem management, habitat conservation, and reduced human interference.

Chilika Lake continues to stand as one of India’s most vital wetlands, attracting migratory birds from across the globe.
