Chhath Puja Set for Global Recognition: PM Modi Announces UNESCO Inclusion Effort

In a culturally resonant episode of his monthly radio address “Mann Ki Baat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Indian government is actively working to include Chhath Puja in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

The announcement, made during the 126th episode of the program, marks a significant step toward globalising one of India’s most spiritually rich and ecologically conscious festivals.

PM Modi emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting India’s diverse cultural traditions, citing the successful inclusion of Kolkata’s Durga Puja in the UNESCO list as a precedent.

He expressed hope that Chhath Puja, celebrated predominantly in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, would soon receive similar international recognition.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on their birth anniversaries, highlighting their enduring influence on India’s cultural and patriotic landscape.

In addition to cultural preservation, Modi reiterated his call for “Vocal for Local,” urging citizens to support indigenous products during the festive season. He also acknowledged grassroots efforts empowering women through traditional crafts and praised the Indian Navy’s officers for their courage and service.

The announcement comes amid Navratri celebrations and aligns with broader efforts to elevate India’s cultural identity on the world stage.

If successful, Chhath Puja’s inclusion in the UNESCO list would not only honour centuries-old traditions but also spotlight India’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive heritage.
