Chariot Dismantling Begins at Puri Jagannath Temple, Marking End of Rath Yatra Festivities
PURI, (OT Webdesk) — The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has officially commenced the dismantling of the three sacred chariots—Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Lord Balabhadra), and Darpadalana (Devi Subhadra)—used during the annual Rath Yatra.
The ritual began at the Singha Dwara with the deconstruction of Darpadalana. Unlike the construction phase, which starts from the base, dismantling begins from the top, involving the careful removal of sacred components such as the kalash, olta sua, khapuri parabadhi, and potala.
Prior to this, symbolic elements like horses, charioteers, and parshwa deva-devis were respectfully detached.
The entire operation is being conducted under tight security, with a dedicated facility prepared to store the dismantled parts. Bhoi servitors, entrusted with this sacred duty, are expected to complete the process within 15 to 20 days.
SJTA has emphasised strict adherence to ritual and safety protocols to preserve the sanctity of the tradition.
This annual dismantling marks the formal conclusion of the Rath Yatra festivities and reflects the cyclical rhythm of devotion and craftsmanship that defines Odisha’s cultural heritage.
