Cabinet Clears Rs 12,000 Crore LPG Subsidy for Ujjwala Yojana in FY 2025–26

(OT Webdesk)In a major push for clean energy access and women empowerment, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Rs 12,000 crore for LPG subsidies under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the financial year 2025–26.

The subsidy will provide Rs 300 per 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for up to nine refills annually to PMUY beneficiaries.

Since its launch in May 2016, the scheme has transformed cooking fuel access for over 10.33 crore women from economically weaker households.

Under Ujjwala 2.0, beneficiaries receive deposit-free LPG connections, a free stove, and the first refill at no cost.

The targeted subsidy, initially Rs 200 per cylinder in 2022, was raised to Rs 300 in 2023 to offset global price fluctuations.

This move has led to a steady increase in LPG usage, with average consumption rising from 3.68 refills in 2022–23 to 4.47 in 2024–25.

The continuation of this subsidy underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive energy access, environmental sustainability, and public health.
