C.P. Radhakrishnan Elected as India’s 15th Vice President, NDA Consolidates Power
In a decisive electoral victory, Maharashtra Governor and NDA nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, securing 452 votes against Opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy’s 314.
The election, held at Parliament House on September 9, 2025, saw a remarkable 96% turnout, with 766 of 781 eligible MPs casting their votes.
Radhakrishnan’s win reinforces the National Democratic Alliance’s grip on India’s political landscape. With a background steeped in public service, the BJP veteran brings decades of experience to the role.
Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, he has served as a Member of Parliament, chaired key parliamentary committees, and held gubernatorial posts across multiple states.
His election also positions him as Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, a pivotal role in legislative proceedings.
The Opposition, led by the INDIA bloc, rallied behind retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, framing the contest as a battle for constitutional values.
Despite a unified front and full turnout from its 315 MPs, the bloc fell short of the required majority.
The election was necessitated by the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health concerns.
Notable moments included Prime Minister Narendra Modi casting the first vote and jailed MP Engineer Rashid receiving special permission to participate.
Radhakrishnan’s victory signals continuity for the NDA and sets the tone for upcoming political contests, with both camps sharpening their ideological narratives.
