BJD Calls for Reconsideration of MLA Salary Hike Amid Public Discontent
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has urged the Odisha government to revisit its recent decision to raise the salaries of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
Acting on the directive of party president Naveen Patnaik, senior leaders announced the move during a press meet, citing growing public dissatisfaction.
Chief Whip Pramila Mallik and Deputy Chief Whip Pratap Keshari Deb appealed to Chief Minister Mohan Majhi to respect public sentiment and review the hike. “We had supported the bill then, but now people’s discontent must be respected,” they said, acknowledging that circumstances have changed since the bill’s passage.
Naveen Patnaik himself set an example by declining to accept the increased salary, reinforcing the party’s stance on restraint and accountability.
BJD leaders pointed to his decision as a precedent for reconsideration, stressing the importance of aligning political decisions with citizens’ expectations.
The appeal highlights the party’s effort to balance governance with public opinion, signalling a shift in approach as dissatisfaction grows across Odisha.
