Bilaspur Train Tragedy: Odisha CM Expresses Grief, Railways Announces Compensation

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh | November 4, 2025 — A devastating train accident near Bilaspur has claimed at least 12 lives and left over 15 passengers injured after a passenger train collided with a stationary freight train around 4:30 PM. The impact was so severe that several passenger coaches mounted the goods train, leaving some suspended mid-air.

Among the deceased are three railway employees. Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency teams using gas cutters to extract trapped passengers. Injured individuals have been shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a post on social media platform X, he conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. “Praying for strength and healing for all those affected,” he wrote.

Indian Railways has announced ex gratia compensation:

  • Rs 10 lakh for families of the deceased
  • Rs 5 lakh for seriously injured passengers
  • Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries

Senior officials are monitoring the situation on-site, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.
