Bhubaneswar’s Damana & VSS Nagar Markets Go Plastic‑Free
Bhubaneswar, March 18: In a significant step toward sustainability, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a phased campaign to make Damana and VSS Nagar markets plastic‑free.
The 15‑day drive began with awareness programs led by volunteer groups, urging traders and shoppers to adopt eco‑friendly alternatives such as cloth and jute bags.
In the second phase, strict enforcement will follow, with penalties for those continuing to use single‑use plastics.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, pledging to carry reusable bags, while traders acknowledge the importance of sustainable packaging despite concerns over costs and supply.
The BMC views this as a pilot project, with plans to extend similar drives to other markets across the city if successful.
Officials emphasise that the campaign is not just about enforcement but about inspiring citizens to embrace eco‑friendly habits, contributing to a cleaner and greener Bhubaneswar.
