Bhubaneswar to Lead Odisha’s Next Big Urban Expansion

Odisha metropolitan region

( OT Webdesk)In a landmark move set to redefine urbanisation in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced plans to integrate six major cities—Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khordha, Jatani, Paradip, and Puri—into a mega metropolitan region.

The proposal was unveiled during the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in New Delhi.

Spanning approximately 7,000 square kilometres, the urban cluster aims to boost Odisha’s urbanisation rate from the current 17% to 40% by 2036 and 60% by 2047.

The project aligns with the state’s economic vision of reaching a $500 billion economy by 2036 and $1.5 trillion by 2047.

A key aspect of the plan is the modernisation and expansion of Bhubaneswar, addressing urban congestion, housing shortages, and infrastructure needs.

The long-discussed Tri-City concept linking Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri will finally take shape, serving as the nucleus of the larger metropolitan region.

The inclusion of Khordha, Jatani, and Paradip adds significant economic and cultural weight to the initiative.

This ambitious undertaking is expected to drive integrated urban planning, infrastructure upgrades, and economic growth, positioning Odisha as a model for future urban expansion.
