Science City in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar to Get Science City: Odisha Pushes Innovation with Central Backing

(OT Webdesk)In a strategic push to position Bhubaneswar as a hub of scientific innovation, the Odisha government has proposed the development of a cutting-edge Science City in the capital. During a high-level meeting with Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi, Odisha’s Minister Krushna Chandra Patra sought central support for the initiative.

The state has earmarked 100 acres of land for the project, envisioned as an interactive space for immersive learning, modern scientific exhibits, and research. “We believe central support will be instrumental in realising this vision,” Patra stated in a formal letter to the Centre.

The proposal aligns with the Government of India’s broader strategy to promote STEM education and foster innovation at the regional level.

Dr. Singh responded positively, encouraging collaborative planning to move the project forward.

We also suggested strengthening Odisha’s existing CSIR labs and space research centres to complement the Science City’s mission.

In addition, Patra outlined complementary proposals, including:

  • An Astronomy Observatory
  • A Bay of Bengal Coastal Observatory
  • An Intellectual Property & Patent Facilitation Centre
  • Research initiatives under the Department of Biotechnology

These proposals aim to leverage Odisha’s natural and academic strengths, particularly its coastal and mineral resources, for national missions like the Deep Ocean Mission.

Dr. Singh further encouraged exploring the Centre’s Bio-E3 policy by establishing a Bio E-Cell, creating potential for biotech innovation across sectors.

This proposal underscores the spirit of cooperative federalism and Odisha’s ambition to lead in India’s scientific and innovation ecosystem.
