Bhubaneswar Police Officer Arrested for Rape and Deception of Colleague

In a case that has sent shockwaves through Odisha’s law enforcement community, a senior police officer in Bhubaneswar has been arrested on charges of rape, sexual exploitation, and deception.

The accused, Roshan Acharya alias Toshabanta, was recently promoted to In-Charge Inspector and allegedly abused his position to exploit a female colleague over an eight-year period.

The victim, a Sub-Inspector posted at the same outpost, filed a formal FIR at the Mahila Police Station, detailing how Acharya repeatedly assaulted her under the false promise of marriage.

The incidents reportedly occurred within the confines of the police station itself, raising serious concerns about internal safety and ethical standards within the force.

Commissionerate Police acted swiftly, arresting Acharya and forwarding him to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.

Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner S Devadatta Singh has ordered a thorough investigation, stating, “If the charges are proven true, the accused will face the harshest penalties.

This is unacceptable and undermines our commitment to protecting all, especially women officers.”

The case has sparked widespread criticism, with insiders calling it a “stain on the uniform” and demanding stronger safeguards for women in law enforcement.
