Bhubaneswar Launches Dedicated Gupchup Market to Boost Hygiene and Ease Traffic
Bhubaneswar, Nov 9, 2025 — In a move that blends culinary culture with urban planning, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled a pilot project to establish a dedicated Gupchup (Pani Puri) market in the city.
The initiative aims to streamline street vending, reduce traffic congestion, and elevate hygiene standards for one of Odisha’s most beloved snacks.
The market will be located in front of the Regional Institute of Education, transforming previously unused land into a vibrant food hub. Designed to accommodate 30–40 vendors, the space will feature free trolley stalls, paved flooring, beautification elements, and essential amenities like parking and lighting.
Mayor Sulochana Das emphasised the dual goals of cleanliness and convenience: “Gupchup is beloved by people, and it’s sold everywhere. We wanted to create an organised space for vendors, away from the chaos of roadside vending.”
Stalls will operate daily from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with vendors required to wear gloves while serving, ensuring a safer and more hygienic experience for customers.
The market will also offer a variety of Gupchup styles, including Dahi Gupchup and Pudina Special, catering to diverse tastes.
This initiative marks a significant step toward structured street food vending in Bhubaneswar, promising a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable experience for both vendors and food lovers.
