Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today) May 6 : Heavy rain and thunderstorms triggered by a Norwester caused havoc in the state capital Bhubaneswar on Monday uprooting trees leading to road blockades at many places in the city.
The Special Relief Commissioner(SRC) directed the Fire service, ODRAF, and ODFC personnel to clear the road blockades immediately.
SRC office sources said the tree cutting and road clearance in the city is going on.
Meanwhile, the IMD on Monday predicted that Thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind are likely over several districts of Odisha during the next 4-5 days
It said due to likely interaction of middle dry westerly with lower level moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, meteorological conditions becoming favourable for moderate thunderstorm activity with lightning, Hail, Heavy Rain, Gusty surface wind, and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over the districts of Odisha during next 4 to 5 days.
People are advised to keep watch on weather and take safe shelter during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. .
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and Hail are very likely to occur over the districts of Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Gajapati,Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Koraput, Rayagada,Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts,the IMD release said
MeT sources said as many as 19 locations in Odisha ,the day temperature on Monday hovered over 40 degree Celsius.
Bolangir in Western Odisha was the hottest place in the state with the day temperature rising to 44.5 degree Celsius.
Jharsuguda,Sambalpur, Bhawanipatna and Titlagarh in Western Odisha the mercury crossed above 43 degree Celsius,IMD sources said .
