Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure Near Sri Lanka: IMD Confirms No Cyclone Threat to Odisha

A developing weather system over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the Sri Lanka coast intensified into a low-pressure area on Thursday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system is expected to strengthen further within the next 12 hours, potentially evolving into a deep depression as it moves northwestward over the sea.

Despite speculation about cyclone formation, IMD officials have clarified that Odisha faces no threat at this stage.

Forecast models suggest the system will gradually consolidate while advancing toward the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–south Andhra Pradesh coastline.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Senyar, which recently formed over the Malacca Strait, continues to circulate east of Indonesia.

Meteorologists confirm that its trajectory remains far from the Bay of Bengal, eliminating any danger to Odisha or the Indian mainland.

The IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted calm and dry weather across all districts until at least December 2. No rainfall warnings have been issued, though night temperatures are expected to dip by 2–3°C in several central and interior districts, marking the onset of winter-like conditions.
