Bargarh Dhanu Yatra Begins: World’s Largest Open-Air Theatre Comes Alive

Bargarh, Odisha: The world-famous Dhanu Yatra festival commenced today in Bargarh, transforming the town into the mythical city of Mathura Nagari for the next eleven days.

Recognised as the largest open-air theatre in the world, the festival recreates episodes from the Dwapar Yuga, centring on the reign of King Kansa.

Over an 8 km radius, the spectacle unfolds across three royal courts—Raj Darbar, Rang Mahal, and Nanda Raja’s Darbar—and 18 open-air stages, where artists bring mythology to life.

Elaborate arrangements, including royal regalia, elephants, horses, and ceremonial costumes, have been prepared for the enactments.

District officials, including Collector Aditya Goyal and SP Prahallad Sahay Meena, reviewed final preparations, ensuring smooth execution. Security has been tightened with 28 platoons of police and 150 officers, while the entire town remains under CCTV surveillance.

The festivities will feature cultural processions, temple rituals, and dramatic performances. Tomorrow, a grand procession will begin at 2 PM from Gandhi Chowk to Samaleswari Temple, followed by evening worship and a march towards the Raj Darbar.

The inaugural ceremony will be graced by MP Pradeep Purohit and MLA Ashwini Sarangi.

With its unique blend of mythology, culture, and community participation, Dhanu Yatra continues to captivate audiences, reaffirming its place as a cultural jewel of Odisha.
