Barbil Illuminates with Devotion: Grand Chhath Celebrations at Dam and Karo River Ghats
Keonjhar : Barbil, the mining heartland of Odisha’s Keonjhar district, is witnessing a spectacular celebration of Chhath Puja this year, with thousands of devotees gathering at its two iconic ghats—Barbil Dam and Karo River—for rituals steeped in tradition and community spirit.
Karo River Ghat: A Bridge of Faith and Festivity
The Station Road Chhath Puja Committee has transformed the Karo River ghat near Lakshmi Nagar into a vibrant spiritual hub. A bamboo bridge has been constructed across the river, allowing devotees to safely reach the water for their offerings.
The approach road has been cleaned and adorned with colourful lighting, while a grand welcome gate at OMC Chowk greets worshippers with warmth and reverence.

Barbil Dam: A Legacy Since 1963
Barbil Dam, the oldest and most revered Chhath venue in the region, continues its tradition under the stewardship of the Barbil Chhath Puja Committee and Bihari Kalyan Samiti. First celebrated in 1963, the dam is expected to host over 10,000 devotees this year.
A two-kilometre stretch from the city to the dam has been illuminated with dazzling lights, and crowd management has been meticulously planned with three entry and three exit gates. CCTV surveillance ensures round-the-clock safety.
Community and Administration Join Hands
With an estimated budget of Rs 10 lakh, the committees have received full support from the local administration, including the municipality, fire brigade, police, and electricity department. Organisers have expressed heartfelt gratitude for the seamless coordination and civic cooperation.

Weather Alert Casts a Shadow
While preparations are in full swing, the Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert that could potentially disrupt the celebrations. Organisers remain vigilant and are prepared to respond to any weather-related challenges.
As Barbil glows with faith and festivity, the Chhath Puja stands as a testament to the city’s cultural unity, spiritual resilience, and organisational excellence.
