Auto-rickshaw driver killed in armed assault amidst polling in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), May 20: A tragic incident unfolded in Sarsara village, situated under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Bargarh district on Monday morning, as an auto-rickshaw driver fell victim to a brutal attack by a group of armed men.

The victim, identified as Biswanath Mirdha, lost his life amidst the chaos that ensued during the ongoing polls in the region, sparking widespread concern throughout the district.

As per reports, the violence erupted at the Government Primary School polling booth in Sarsara village, where a gang armed with sharp weapons instilled fear among voters. Biswanath, who was ferrying voters to the polling station in his auto-rickshaw, courageously stood against the assailants, only to face a vicious assault. He sustained critical injuries from a bhujali wielded by one of the attackers.

Despite immediate medical attention at a local facility, Biswanath succumbed to his injuries.

Following the tragic event, IG Himanshu Lal and Bargarh SP Prahallad Sai Meena swiftly arrived at the scene, calming the agitated crowd and overseeing the transportation of the deceased for post-mortem examination.
