ASI Inspects Lingaraj Temple After Lightning Strike Damages Flag and Equipment
Bhubaneswar, Oct 9 — A lightning strike on Wednesday jolted the historic Lingaraj Temple, causing damage to key infrastructure and prompting swift action from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The incident scorched the temple’s ceremonial flag, disrupted CCTV surveillance, and destroyed several lighting fixtures.
ASI officials arrived promptly to assess the damage and oversee restoration efforts. The burnt flag was replaced, and a detailed inspection was carried out to evaluate structural integrity and electrical systems impacted by the strike.
The 11th-century shrine, a cornerstone of Odisha’s architectural heritage, is already under ASI’s conservation program.
Officials confirmed that advanced preservation techniques—such as 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry—are being considered to bolster the temple’s resilience against future natural events.
The ASI’s rapid response underscores its commitment to safeguarding cultural landmarks. Further evaluations are expected to ensure long-term protection and prevent recurrence of such incidents.
