Annual Blackbuck Census Begins in Ganjam, Odisha | Wildlife Conservation Efforts Show Results

Ganjam, Odisha: The annual census of blackbucks has commenced across the Ghumusar South, Ghumusar North, and Berhampur forest ranges of Ganjam district.

Forest officials expect a rise in the population compared to last year’s count of 404, reflecting the success of ongoing conservation efforts.

Eighteen teams comprising forest staff and students, trained at Lalsingh nursery, are conducting the exercise.

Divisional Forest Officer Himanshu Sekhar Mohanty has instructed teams to ensure smooth operations, while Assistant Conservator of Forests Bibek Das emphasised strict adherence to rules, including avoiding selfies with the animals and maintaining the integrity of reports.

The census will be carried out in two phases, tracking sightings and movements across habitats. Officials attribute the steady growth of the blackbuck population to improved conservation measures and increased community awareness.

Blackbucks, considered a symbol of Odisha’s wildlife heritage, face threats from habitat loss and poaching.

The census findings will help shape future protection strategies and reinforce conservation initiatives in the region.
