Alia Bhatt Breaks Filmfare Record with Sixth Best Actress Win for Jigra

Alia Bhatt has etched her name in Bollywood history by clinching her sixth Best Actress trophy at the 70th Filmfare Awards, surpassing iconic actresses Nutan and Kajol, who each held five wins.

Her latest accolade comes for her emotionally charged performance in Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala.

The ceremony, held Saturday night, saw Laapataa Ladies sweep 13 awards—the most for any film this year—though it missed out on acting honours.

Alia’s win marks her third consecutive Best Actress title, following previous victories for Udta Punjab, Raazi, Gully Boy, Gangubai Kathiawadi, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Before Alia, the record was held by Meena Kumari until Nutan surpassed it in 1979. Kajol later equalled Nutan’s tally in 2011.

Other notable winners in the category include Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit (four wins each), and Vyjayanthimala, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi (three each).

While fans celebrated Alia’s milestone, social media reactions were mixed. Some praised her consistency, while others questioned the repeated recognition, calling for newer faces to be spotlighted.

In Jigra, Alia portrays a fiercely determined sister who attempts a high-stakes jailbreak to save her brother from death row.

Though the film underperformed commercially—earning Rs 55 crore against an Rs 80 crore budget—critics lauded her performance for its emotional depth and intensity.

Looking ahead, Alia is set to appear in the YRF Spy Universe and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, continuing her reign as one of Bollywood’s most decorated and bankable stars.
