Bhubaneswar, June 19(OT Webdesk): AIIMS Bhubaneswar is poised to be officially recognised as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the management and research of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram announced during World Sickle Cell Awareness Day celebrations held at the institute today.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Oram underscored AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s pivotal role in delivering critical care to SCD patients not only from Odisha but also from neighbouring tribal regions.
“The CoE status will empower the institute with enhanced capabilities for cutting-edge research and improved treatment,” Oram emphasised.
India has screened over 5.79 crore individuals under the national campaign to eliminate Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047.
Of these, 2.10 lakh have been confirmed with SCD, while 16.38 lakh are identified as carriers.
Currently, AIIMS Bhubaneswar cares for more than 700 SCD patients, the majority being pediatric cases between 0–19 years of age.
Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas elaborated on the institute’s comprehensive services, including carrier and prenatal screening, exchange transfusion therapies, and early diagnosis of genetic and metabolic disorders.
In addition to clinical care, the institution emphasises community outreach, medical education, and scientific collaboration.
Minister Oram toured facilities, interacted with patients, and lauded the hospital’s inclusive approach, especially its focus on underserved and tribal populations.
The event also witnessed participation from government officials, medical experts, and researchers, spotlighting AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s mission to become a national leader in sickle cell care.
