AIIMS Bhubaneswar Sets National Benchmark with First-Ever Liver Transplant ICU Among AIIMS Institutes

AIIMS Bhubaneswar is poised to transform liver care in India with the launch of a dedicated 10-bed Liver Transplant ICU, making it the first among all AIIMS institutions to offer such a specialised facility.

Scheduled to be operational within two months, the unit will cater to patients suffering from advanced liver cirrhosis (stages B and C) and children born with biliary atresia—a rare congenital condition.

The initiative promises cutting-edge surgical care and stringent infection control protocols.

In a country where liver transplants typically cost Rs 20–30 lakh in private hospitals, AIIMS Bhubaneswar will offer the procedure at a significantly reduced cost of Rs 5 lakh. For Ayushman Bharat cardholders, the cost may drop further to Rs 2.5–3 lakh.

The institute is also working to provide organ preservation solutions free of charge, further easing the financial burden on families.

A specialised team of doctors has already been assembled to oversee transplant procedures, signaling a major leap forward in affordable and accessible healthcare in eastern India.
