AIIMS Bhubaneswar introduces leech therapy for chronic ulcers

Bhubaneswar, Sep 24 (UNI) The AYUSH Department at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has introduced leech therapy to treat conditions such as non-healing ulcers, varicose veins, and eczema.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director, Dr Ashutosh Biswas, said the AYUSH department provides comprehensive outpatient (OPD) and inpatient (IPD) services. These include classical Ayurvedic therapies like Panchakarma, Shirodhara, and Kati Basti.

The institute plans to introduce personalised treatments using Digital Nadi Pariksha. A dedicated pharmacy also dispenses Ayurvedic, Homoeopathic, and Unani medicines to patients free of charge.
Dr Biswas highlighted the growing relevance of Ayurveda and reiterated AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s commitment to integrating traditional Indian medicine with modern practices.

On the occasion of Ayurveda Day, the institute released its in-house magazine, ‘AYUSHVANI’, which will share updates and research from the department.

A dedicated Kshar Sutra Operation Theatre is now functional for managing anorectal disorders like fistula. Additionally, eye conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are being treated with Kriyakalpa and Panchakarma procedures.
The AYUSH department works in close coordination with other clinical units for patient referrals and diagnostic services. Current research focuses on conditions including diabetes, arthritis, PCOS, infertility, and skin diseases.
As part of its community outreach, the department regularly holds AYUSH health camps and a monthly Swarna Bindu Prashan programme for children.
