
Odisha Honors Sporting Icons and Bravehearts on National Sports Day
Bhubaneswar, August 29 — Odisha celebrated National Sports Day with a spirited ceremony at Jayadev Bhawan, spotlighting the state’s commitment to athletic excellence and valour.
Hosted by the Sports and Youth Services Department, the event was graced by Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, who emphasised the transformative power of sports and the legacy of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The prestigious Biju Patnaik Sports Awards 2024 were conferred upon eight individuals for their outstanding contributions.
Among the honorees were Sri Bijay Kumar Satpathy (Lifetime Achievement in Weightlifting), Sri Animesh Kujur (Outstanding Performance in Athletics), and Smt.
Sushama Nanda (Excellence in Coaching Volleyball). The Biju Patnaik Bravery Awards 2024 recognised Sri Jiban Kumar Behera and Sri Chittaranjan Pradhan for their courageous acts.
Governor Kambhampati lauded Odisha’s emergence as a global sports hub, attributing its success to grassroots initiatives and visionary leadership.
He urged youth to embody the values of discipline, teamwork, and humility, positioning awardees as role models for future generations.
Dignitaries, including Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and MLA Babu Singh, echoed the state’s dedication to nurturing talent.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary Sachin Ramchandra Yadav delivered the welcome address, while Director Edula Vijay concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
The ceremony reaffirmed Odisha’s mission to elevate its sporting legacy and inspire young athletes to shine on the global stage.
