Odisha Police Cracks Down on Forced Festive Donations with Statewide Directive
(OT Webdesk)In a decisive move to uphold public order and curb harassment, the Odisha Police has issued a statewide directive banning unauthorised ‘puja chanda’ collections during the festive season.
The announcement follows a high-level review meeting at the State Police Headquarters in Cuttack, where Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania emphasised a zero-tolerance approach toward forced donations.
“Every year, we receive complaints about coercive fundraising in the name of religious celebrations. This year, we are taking a firm stand,” DGP Khurania stated.
To enforce the directive, district Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been instructed to intensify patrolling, conduct surprise checks, and deploy CCTV surveillance in sensitive zones.
Habitual offenders will be closely monitored, and police will coordinate with Puja committees and community leaders to ensure compliance.
Cyber cells have been activated for 24/7 monitoring of social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumours.
Special vigilance will be maintained during idol immersion ceremonies, with coordination meetings planned to facilitate peaceful festivities.
The Odisha Police has assured citizens of robust security arrangements across the state, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding public interest and preserving the spirit of celebration.
