Odisha CHSE Overhauls Plus Two Curriculum to Embed Environmental and Ethical Learning

(OT Webdesk)In a landmark move aimed at reshaping higher secondary education, the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha, has announced a comprehensive revision of the Plus Two syllabus, effective from the 2025–26 academic session.

The reform introduces two thematic units—Environmental Education and Value Education—strategically embedded within compulsory subjects.

According to the official notification, Environmental Education will be integrated into the English syllabus, allowing students to explore ecological concerns through literary texts. Meanwhile, Value Education will be woven into MIL (Mother Tongue) subjects, encouraging engagement with ethical, cultural, and social themes.

These additions are not merely symbolic. They will be reflected in the 2026 board examinations, with question papers featuring components that assess students’ grasp of these interdisciplinary themes.

The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes character-building, sustainability, and holistic learning.

This curriculum overhaul is part of a broader educational reform agenda in Odisha. In a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the state approved the merger of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) and CHSE into a unified board.

Additional measures include free textbooks for Class IX and X students and the deployment of B.Ed-qualified special educators across school clusters.

Education officials believe these steps will strengthen Odisha’s academic infrastructure and better equip students for the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
