Cyber Fraud Horror: 73-Year-Old Cancer Patient Loses Rs 49 Lakh!

Kolkata, May 5, 2025 ( OT Webdesk) – A 73-year-old woman battling cancer became the victim of an elaborate cyber fraud, losing Rs 49 lakh to scammers posing as officials. The fraudsters, two brothers from Odisha’s Rourkela, falsely claimed that a parcel in her name contained sensitive documents and foreign currency.

Threatened with legal action, the victim, Mala Goswami, transferred the money through RTGS.

Concerned about her sudden isolation, her son in Bengaluru raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to intervene and take her to the police. A swift investigation led Kolkata Police to Chandra Prakash Tulsian, a 19-year-old suspect who was arrested in Rourkela. His elder brother, Shivam, remains at large.

Chandra Prakash was granted bail under strict conditions, including daily check-ins at the police station. Authorities continue their pursuit of Shivam to bring closure to the case
