12 Gates of Hirakud Dam Opened to Ease Rising Floodwaters
Sambalpur, (OT Webdesk) — In response to heavy rainfall across the Mahanadi River catchment, authorities have opened 12 gates of the Hirakud Dam to release excess floodwater and prevent downstream flooding.
The dam is currently receiving 2,13,627 cusecs of inflow and discharging 2,24,670 cusecs into the river system.
Eight gates on the left bank and four on the right have been activated as the water level reached 621.69 feet.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation and expect the discharge to continue until the reservoir stabilises.
This strategic release is part of Odisha’s broader flood management protocol aimed at safeguarding vulnerable areas.
Residents living downstream have been advised to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
The Hirakud Dam, one of Asia’s longest earthen dams, plays a critical role in flood control, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation in the region.
