Odisha to Establish Second Regional Plant Resource Centre in Keonjhar by 2027

In a landmark move to bolster biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved plans for the state’s second Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) in Sanaghagara, Keonjhar.

Spanning 134 acres, the centre will serve as a vibrant hub for nature lovers, researchers, and tourists.

The RPRC will showcase Odisha’s rich floral diversity, with a special emphasis on orchid species, alongside roses, bamboos, cacti, wild edible fruits, and medicinal plants.

The facility will feature thematic gardens, lotus ponds, fern gardens, and a dedicated orchid conservation and display centre. A flower market and children’s playgrounds will further enhance its appeal as a family-friendly destination.

To promote sustainability, all furniture and fixtures will be crafted from local stone and wood. The centre will remain open year-round, positioning it as a premier eco-tourism site.

Addressing regional challenges, CM Majhi directed officials to implement measures to mitigate elephant-human conflicts, including deep trenches.

He also emphasised preserving the natural flow of the Machhkandana River.

The high-level meeting included Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahoo, PCCF Suresh Pant, Principal Secretary Sashwat Mishra, Keonjhar Collector Vishal Singh (via video), and DFO Dhanraj Hanumant Dhamdere.
