Keonjhar (Rasanand Behera) Mar 21 : The persistent delays and cancellations of the Howrah-Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express (Train No. 12021/12022) have caused significant inconvenience to passengers. Over the past year, the train was canceled 24 times and delayed on 164 occasions. Recent data reveals that in the last month alone, the train was canceled 14 times and delayed on 8 days. In the past week, it was canceled on 4 days and operated with significant delays on 2 days, further exacerbating passenger woes.
The Barbil Civil Society, a group of intellectuals from the iron belt, raised concerns about the operational inefficiency of railway authorities. On March 19, they lodged a complaint with the railway authorities through their social media handle, warning of a public agitation if the train’s punctuality is not addressed.
Taking the issue seriously, BJP leader and Barbil Municipality MP representative Neelamani Mahanta brought the matter to the attention of Kendujhar MP Anant Nayak. In response, MP Nayak formally notified Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging immediate action to resolve the issue. He requested the minister to take necessary steps to ensure the timeliness and regularity of the Jan Shatabdi Express.
The delays and cancellations of this train have severely impacted the people of northern Odisha and West Singhbhum, as it serves as a vital mode of transport for students, traders and professionals. MP Nayak emphasized the need for a permanent solution to this problem, highlighting not only the inconvenience faced by passengers but also raising questions about the accountability of railway administration.
The Barbil Civil Society has warned of a public movement if the issue persists, and hopes are high that the Railway Ministry will address the problem promptly.
