Diarrhoea outbreak strikes Rayagada and Koraput, one victim succumbs

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), June 11: In the midst of a diarrhoea outbreak across parts of Odisha’s Rayagada and Koraput districts, one fatality and approximately 44 others have been affected by the disease. Initial reports indicate that the water-borne illness claimed the life of one individual and left four others in critical condition in Rayagada, with around 40 cases reported in Koraput. Patients have presented symptoms including loose motions, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain.

The deceased, identified as Gopal Kandamaka, was admitted to Muniguda Community Health Centre (CHC) after experiencing loose motions. Upon his deteriorating condition, he was transferred to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), where he passed away during treatment.

In Rayagada, one patient is receiving treatment at Muniguda Government Hospital, while three others are admitted to Christian Hospital in Bisamkatak, all in critical condition. Meanwhile, in Koraput’s Sabai village, approximately 40 residents are undergoing treatment for diarrhoea.

Responding to the sudden surge in cases, the Health Department dispatched a medical team to the affected village to assess the situation and investigate the underlying causes of the outbreak. Contaminated water is suspected as the primary source of transmission.

Authorities have taken preventive measures by dispersing bleaching powder in the affected areas to mitigate the spread of the disease.
