Odisha Cities Choke on Post-Diwali Smog as AQI Hits Hazardous Levels
The festive glow of Diwali dimmed under a blanket of toxic smog across Odisha’s major cities, as air quality plummeted to hazardous levels following widespread firecracker use. Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri reported alarming spikes in their Air Quality Index (AQI), triggering health concerns and renewed calls for stricter pollution control.
In Bhubaneswar, AQI readings crossed 180, while Cuttack registered 190—both categorized as “poor” and “unhealthy.” Puri faced the worst impact, with AQI soaring to 657 at 7 PM and remaining at 595 by 9 PM, marking “extremely hazardous” conditions. Visibility dropped below 200 meters in several areas, disrupting traffic and endangering pedestrians.
Environmental experts warn that the post-Diwali pollution surge highlights the urgent need for better urban air management. Recommendations include tighter enforcement of firecracker regulations, improved waste disposal systems, and public awareness campaigns to curb festive-season emissions.
As Odisha reels from the aftermath, the incident reignites debate over balancing cultural celebrations with environmental responsibility.
