Bay of Bengal depression

Bay of Bengal System Strengthens: Depression Likely by October 22, Says IMD

A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal became a well-marked low-pressure system as of 8:30 AM IST on October 21, 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

The system is expected to intensify into a depression by the afternoon of October 22 over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh.

According to the IMD, the system is likely to continue moving in a west-northwestward direction, approaching the coastal regions of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh. Further intensification is expected during the subsequent 24 hours.

While Odisha remains outside the immediate impact zone, the system’s peripheral influence may sustain light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds across southern and coastal districts of the state through October 26.

The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and will issue updated forecasts as the depression evolves.
