Bollywood mourns the demise of veteran comedian Asrani

Mumbai, Oct 21 (UNI) The Indian film industry is grieving the loss of veteran actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani, whose unmatched comic brilliance and warm screen presence brought laughter and light to generations of cinema-goers.

Condolences have poured in from every corner of the film fraternity, with actors, singers and colleagues remembering the veteran as a true artist and a wonderful human being.
Anupam Kher took to X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the death of Asrani. In his caption, he expressed his heartbreak over the news of his death, and wrote, “Dearest #AsraniJi! Thank you for making the world a better place to be in with your persona!! On and off screen! We will miss you in physical form! But cinema and your ability to make people laugh will keep you alive for years to come! Om Shanti!” He also shared a video remembering Asrani.

Late on Monday, Akshay Kumar shared a deeply emotional message on X, reminiscing about his long association with the late actor. He recalled having met Asrani only a week earlier during the shoot of “Haiwaan” and spoke fondly of his gentle nature and impeccable comic timing. Akshay noted that he had learned immensely from working with Asrani in films such as “Hera Pheri”, “Bhagam Bhag”, “Welcome”, “Khatra Meetha” and “Bhool Bhulaiyaa”, describing his death as irreplaceable loss to the film fraternity.

Kajol took to her Instagram stories to share a video clip from The Trial that features her and Asrani in a court. While Kajol was seen as Noyonika Sengupta in the series, Asrani played Navroz Electricwala. In her message, Kajol wrote, “In shock as I heard this news. I’m sure #Asrani Ji is in a much better place now. My deepest condolences to his loved ones.”

Singer Adnan Sami too remembered Asrani with affection and reverence, described Asrani as a genius of his craft, equally brilliant in comedy and drama. Adnan recalled their collaboration on the music video Lift Karade, where Asrani recreated his iconic “Angraizon Ke Zamaane Ke Jailor” persona from Sholay. “His enthusiasm and passion for his work was an example for us all to learn from. He was a thorough gentleman. He was full of love & grace. Thank you God for blessing us with the Genius of Asrani ji,” he added.

Rajpal Yadav, who also worked with Asrani in several cult films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhol, and Bhoot Bangla is saddened by the death of the veteran actor. He wrote, “Whether it be Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhol, or our last film Bhoot Bangla, your contributions to making all the scenes a hit are special.”
