Odisha Not Under Cyclone Threat Yet, IMD Forecasts Low-Pressure System by October 21

Bhubaneswar, October 19, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that Odisha is currently not at risk from any cyclonic activity, despite the formation of a low-pressure area expected over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that while the system may intensify into a depression by October 23, there is no forecast for a cyclone or super cyclone at this stage.

The system is projected to move north–northwest, potentially impacting the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts.

October is historically a peak month for cyclonic developments in the Bay of Bengal. Satellite data from the US-based GFS model indicates the possibility of one or two cyclonic systems forming this month, though IMD officials caution that it is too early to confirm any such development.

Odisha, known for its vulnerability to October cyclones, remains on alert. The IMD is closely monitoring the evolving weather system, with the next 72 hours deemed critical.

Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea and return to shore by October 21 due to anticipated rough conditions over the southern Bay of Bengal and northern Andaman Sea.

The IMD will issue a fresh forecast after October 21, once the low-pressure system has fully developed.
