Odisha Deputy CM Slams Mamata Banerjee’s Comment Amid Durgapur Gang Rape Outrage
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida has strongly condemned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial remark that “girls should not go out at night,” made in the wake of a gang rape case involving an Odia MBBS student in Durgapur.
Parida called the statement “deeply disappointing,” especially coming from a woman leader known as “Didi.” She said the comment not only undermines women’s rights but also insults the 4.9 crore women of West Bengal. “If women cannot expect empathy, protection, and dignity from a woman Chief Minister, then where should they turn?” Parida questioned.
The incident, which has sparked statewide protests, involves a young Odia medical student who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur. She is currently undergoing treatment in a local hospital.
Her father has expressed distrust in the West Bengal police and plans to bring her back to Odisha for safety and recovery.
Student organisations have taken to the streets demanding justice, while BJP leaders have accused the West Bengal government of fostering an unsafe climate for women.
Parida urged Mamata Banerjee to prioritise justice and refrain from making gender-biased statements that shift blame onto victims.
The West Bengal police have arrested three accused and detained one suspect. An FIR has been filed at the New Township Police Station.
