Puri Srimandir Declared Red Zone by DGCA to Curb Drone Violations

In a decisive move to bolster security around one of India’s most revered religious landmarks, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially declared Puri’s Jagannath Temple a Red Zone.

The order, effective until September 25, 2028, prohibits any drone or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) activity over the temple premises.

This action follows repeated violations of the existing no-fly zone, with drones spotted hovering above the temple despite restrictions.

Local residents raised alarms in January after witnessing aerial intrusions, prompting authorities to escalate enforcement.

Under the new classification, drone operators must obtain a valid Unique Identification Number (UIN) from DGCA to fly in surrounding areas. Violators will face legal consequences.

Puri police have ramped up surveillance and issued public advisories to ensure compliance. Officials emphasised that the Red Zone status will help prevent security breaches, especially during high-profile events like the annual Ratha Jatra.

The DGCA’s decision reflects growing concerns over drone misuse near sensitive sites. The administration plans to collaborate with local law enforcement to monitor activity and educate the public about the updated regulations.
