MCL hosts Coal India’s 4th CSR Conclave, Reaffirms Commitment to inclusive growth

Sambalpur, October 09, 2025: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) hosted the 4th edition of Coal India CSR Conclave 2025 at Gopalpur, Odisha.

The one-day conclave brought together senior executives and CSR professionals from across Coal India and its subsidiaries to deliberate on emerging perspectives, best practices, and strategies for impactful CSR interventions.

Shri P M Prasad, Chairman, Coal India Ltd.; Dr. Vinay Ranjan, Director (HR) Coal India; Shri Uday Anant Kaole, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, MCL, along with other distinguished guests, inaugurated the conclave. CVO- Coal India, Functional Directors of MCL, CVO- MCL and Directors from other subsidiaries were eminent in presence at the inaugural ceremony.

Hon’ble Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, connected virtually and lauded Coal India’s sustained commitment to community development through diverse and high-impact CSR projects implemented across the country.

Chairman, Shri Prasad, in his address, emphasised the vital role of Coal India and MCL in particular in shaping India’s development landscape through the lasting social impact of CSR initiatives in the communities.

He highlighted the core principles of People, Profit, and Planet as guiding principles and elaborated on several flagship CSR initiatives benefitting the masses.

Dr Vinay Ranjan, Director (HR) CIL, stated that CSR initiatives should be need-based, fostering meaningful connections with communities and underlined the importance of enhancing branding and visibility, while ensuring purposeful and impactful CSR work.

The conclave featured keynote sessions by distinguished thought leaders — Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Former Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, and Prof. S. Siva Raju, Former Chairperson, Centre of Excellence in CSR, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.

Dr. Chatterjee, in his address on “Recent Trends in CSR and the Unfolding Nature of CSR Engagements”, highlighted the evolving nature of corporate social responsibility and the growing expectation for innovation, accountability, and measurable impact.

He urged organisations to move beyond repetitive CSR activities and focus on transformative, flagship programmes that align with national priorities and deliver tangible, long-term benefits.

Prof. Siva Raju, in his insightful session on “No One Left Behind: Need for Scientific Approaches to CSR”, emphasised the importance of evidence-based planning and evaluation in CSR implementation.

He elaborated on the use of data-driven tools, such as scientific surveys and impact assessments, to accurately identify community needs, define target beneficiaries, and assess outcomes, ensuring that CSR initiatives reach the most deserving sections of society.

The keynote sessions were followed by an interactive panel discussion featuring Directors from various subsidiaries of Coal India.

The panel deliberated on strengthening the CSR ecosystem through innovation, collaboration and cross-learning, while addressing on-ground challenges.

The conclave concluded with the presentation of Outstanding CSR Performer Awards to CSR executives who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and leadership in driving CSR missions of Coal companies.
