Cuttack Internet Blackout Ends After 48-Hour Suspension Over Communal Unrest

Cuttack, Oct 7: After a tense 48-hour digital blackout, internet services were fully restored across Cuttack city on Tuesday evening.

The suspension, enforced by the Odisha Home Department, was a preventive measure following communal unrest triggered by a motorcycle rally organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on October 5.

The rally was held in protest against an earlier attack on a Durga idol immersion procession, which had sparked tensions in several parts of the city.

In response, authorities imposed a 36-hour curfew in sensitive zones, including Dargha Bazar, Mangalabag, Cantonment, and Puri Ghat.

The internet shutdown, initially scheduled to end on October 6 at 7 PM, was extended by another 24 hours, affecting key areas such as CMC, CDA, and the 42 Mauza region.

Social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp remained inaccessible during this period, disrupting communication and daily life.

With the situation now under control, police continue to maintain a strong presence in vulnerable pockets to ensure peace and prevent further escalation.

Residents have welcomed the restoration of services, though concerns remain about the long-term impact of such digital suspensions on civic life and information access.
