Peace Push in Cuttack: CM, Ex-CM, and Congress MLA Respond to Violence
Cuttack — The city is slowly returning to normalcy following violent clashes during a Durga idol immersion procession on Saturday night.
A dispute over music played during the event escalated into stone-pelting and vandalism, leaving several shops and vehicles damaged and injuring police personnel, including DCP Rishikesh Khilari.
In response, the administration suspended internet services from 7 PM Sunday to 7 PM Monday to curb misinformation and maintain peace. Heavy police deployment and flag marches continue in sensitive areas.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the Director General of Police to camp in Cuttack and oversee the situation. “Strict vigilance and community outreach are underway to restore confidence,” a government statement said.
Former Chief Minister and Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik urged citizens to uphold Cuttack’s legacy of communal harmony. “Let’s stay calm and support efforts to restore peace,” he said.
Congress MLA Sofia Firdous demanded stringent legal action against those responsible. Six arrests have been made. Miscreants must face the law,” she stated.
Authorities remain on high alert, working to stabilise the situation and prevent further unrest.
