Relentless Rain Cripples Rayagada: Landslides, Rail Disruptions, and Cancelled Festivities
Rayagada district in Odisha is reeling under the impact of continuous heavy rainfall that triggered landslides, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted daily life.
The downpour caused boulders and mud to crash onto railway tracks near Majhighariani Temple, halting train services between Visakhapatnam and Rayagada.
Railway officials, led by DRM Amitabh Singhal, have initiated single-line operations and restoration efforts.
In Tikarpada village, a house collapsed due to the rain, though no injuries were reported. Several PMGSY roads, including the Titimiri–Bhimapur stretch in Gunupur block, were either washed away or blocked by mudslides, cutting off access to remote areas.
Overflowing drains further isolated villages, while strong winds uprooted trees and damaged infrastructure, including the Putasing Girls’ Hostel.
District Collector Ashutosh Kulkarni has mobilised sub-collectors, tehsildars, and grassroots officials to monitor the situation and assist affected residents.
Vulnerable populations living in mud houses have been urged to relocate to safer locations. In light of the ongoing crisis, Dussehra celebrations across the district have been cancelled.
