Odisha Unveils 15 New Horticultural Varieties, Including India’s First Rose Apple
In a landmark move to revolutionize regional agriculture, the Odisha Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment introduced 15 new horticultural crop varieties during a State Seed Sub-Committee meeting chaired by Principal Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee.
The newly released varieties span contributions from three leading institutions:
- Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT): 8 varieties, including Kalinga Chilli, Mango Ginger, Black Turmeric (OUAT Kalinga Black Turmeric-1), and the locally beloved Kalinga Baby Potato (Phulbani Aloo).
- Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI): 2 varieties—Sweet Potato and Yam Bean.
- Central Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES): 5 varieties, notably including India’s first Rose Apple and three types of Amaranthus.
The Rose Apple marks a national first, poised to diversify fruit cultivation across India. Meanwhile, the Kalinga Black Turmeric is celebrated for its medicinal properties, and Phulbani Aloo is expected to become a consumer favourite due to its distinctive taste.
The event saw participation from key officials, researchers, and progressive farmers, underscoring a collaborative push toward agricultural innovation.
These new varieties are expected to enhance productivity, improve crop resilience, and meet both domestic and commercial demands—solidifying Odisha’s role as a leader in horticultural advancement.
