No Tsunami Threat to India After Massive 8.8 Quake Near Russia’s Kamchatka: INCOIS

(OT Webdesk)India’s Tsunami Warning Centre, operated by INCOIS, has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to the Indian mainland or the broader Indian Ocean region following a powerful undersea earthquake off Russia’s Far East.

The quake, initially recorded at magnitude 8.7 by Indian agencies and later upgraded to 8.8 by the US Geological Survey, struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula early on July 30, 2025.

It triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific Rim, including Russia, Hawaii, Japan, and New Zealand, with warnings of waves reaching up to three metres.

INCOIS swiftly issued a formal statement assuring that Indian coastlines remain safe: “There is no tsunami threat to India or the Indian Ocean region in connection with this earthquake,” the agency said, dispelling concerns fueled by early social media speculation.

The epicentre lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region notorious for seismic activity.

While alerts remain active in parts of the northern Pacific, no evacuation advisories have been issued for India. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, but coastal zones across the country remain calm and unaffected.
