Bhubaneswar (OT webdesk)— All public universities and colleges across Odisha will observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ on June 25, marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared in India in 1975.
This move comes in compliance with a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs and has been officially communicated by the Odisha Higher Education Department.
Institutions have been instructed to conduct full-day programs aimed at educating students and faculty about the importance of constitutional values and the democratic framework of India.
The events will spotlight the suspension of civil liberties during the Emergency, which the department has termed “the darkest chapter in India’s democratic history.”
The planned activities include student and faculty marches, seminars, and interactive sessions focused on the Preamble of the Constitution.
Political science departments have been specifically tasked with hosting panel discussions featuring legal experts and academicians on democracy and civic responsibility.
In addition, various competitions such as essay writing, street plays, poster-making, quizzes, and slogan contests will be held under the theme “Save the Constitution.” Educational institutions are also encouraged to screen documentaries and films that narrate India’s constitutional journey and democratic resilience.
All colleges and universities must submit documentation of their activities — including photographs and attendance records — to the department by June 28, 2025.
The initiative aims to foster reflection, civic engagement, and a deeper understanding of constitutional rights among youth.
