(OT Webdesk)Odisha’s job crisis has hit a shocking new low as over 11,500 candidates have applied for just 240 home guard positions in Berhampur and Ganjam districts.
The recruitment drive, meant for Class V pass holders, has attracted graduates, postgraduates, and even B. Tech and MBA degree holders.
Authorities report receiving 7,500+ applications for 135 posts in Ganjam district, while Berhampur district saw 4,150 candidates vying for just 105 positions.
Despite their educational qualifications, the candidates are drawn to these positions due to the scarcity of secure employment opportunities.
- Written Exam: All applicants are eligible to appear for the test.
- Shortlisting: Around 500–550 candidates will proceed to the physical and document verification stage.
- Daily Pay: Home guards earn Rs 612 per day, underscoring the desperation for financial stability despite the low wages.
Educationist Sudhir Rout describes the overwhelming number of educated applicants as a wake-up call for Odisha’s employment policies.
With B.Tech and MBA graduates competing for basic roles, the job crisis has reached an alarming stage.
This scenario highlights the urgent need for economic and employment reforms to provide skilled job opportunities for qualified professionals, rather than forcing them into low-paying, unskilled roles.
